Faculty Roles During Commencement

Faculty members may fulfill several roles during Commencement:

Marshals

Faculty marshals for each college place students in line for the procession, lead them into and out of Reser Stadium, and sit with them throughout the ceremony.

Undergraduate marshals will line up students on the MU Quad. Graduate and professional marshals will line up with students on the Valley Library quad. Marshals will then lead all students to Reser Stadium and will see that students are seated correctly. During the ceremony, marshals will lead candidates to the platform to receive their diplomas and back to their seats. Finally, they will lead graduates out of the stadium at the end of the ceremony. Graduate marshals may also assist with the hooding of master’s and doctoral candidates.

Doctoral Escorts (Ph.D., ED.D.)

These faculty members escort their doctoral candidates throughout the lineup, processional, ceremony and recessional. They will sit in a special section on the field in Reser Stadium and will assist their candidates with the hooding and the receiving of their diplomas.

Departmental Faculty Representatives

Departmental faculty representatives will line up at 9 a.m. in the MU Quad on the sidewalk in front of Kidder Hall, where they will be directed and led by marshals. Within Reser Stadium, they will be seated in the faculty section on the field. Review the instructions for bachelor’s students for the processional and ceremony.
